Speech Therapy in Evanston, IL

Helping communication skills carry into the classroom, home, friendships, and everyday life.

Sometimes communication concerns become most noticeable once the demands of school increase.

Your child may understand a lesson but struggle to explain what they know. They may have trouble following complex directions, organizing their thoughts, being understood by classmates, or finding the confidence to participate.

Other concerns may be easier to notice at home — frustration explaining what happened during the day, difficulty telling a clear story, or avoiding conversations because speaking feels hard.

At Speak with Stephanie, I provide individualized speech therapy in Evanston for children, teens, and adults.

In-home speech therapy is available throughout Evanston, along with online sessions for added flexibility.

Speech Therapy That Supports Everyday Learning and Communication

Communication is involved in almost every part of a child's school day.

Children need language to:

  • Understand instructions

  • Learn new vocabulary

  • Answer questions

  • Explain their thinking

  • Retell information

  • Read and understand text

  • Participate in classroom discussions

  • Solve problems with peers

  • Ask for help

That is why therapy should extend beyond completing activities correctly during a session.

My goal is to help children use stronger communication skills independently in the situations where they actually need them.

Pediatric Speech Therapy in Evanston

Language & Academic Communication

A language difficulty does not always look like a child who “doesn't talk.”

A child may speak frequently but still have difficulty organizing ideas, understanding complex information, retrieving vocabulary, answering questions clearly, or comprehending what they read.

Language therapy may target:

  • Vocabulary and word relationships

  • Sentence formulation and grammar

  • Following increasingly complex directions

  • Answering questions

  • Verbal reasoning

  • Narrative and storytelling skills

  • Reading comprehension

  • Explaining ideas clearly

  • Organizing spoken information

Treatment is individualized around the specific language demands that are difficult for your child.

Speech Sound Therapy & Articulation

When a child is difficult to understand, it can affect much more than pronunciation.

They may become frustrated repeating themselves or hesitate to speak in front of classmates and unfamiliar adults.

Speech therapy may address:

  • /r/, /l/, /s/, /th/, and other speech sounds

  • Phonological patterns

  • Overall intelligibility

  • Speech clarity during conversation

  • Generalization of sounds outside structured practice

The ultimate goal is helping your child use clearer speech naturally when talking with other people.

Stuttering Therapy in Evanston

School can create many demanding speaking situations: answering unexpectedly, reading aloud, presentations, introductions, and navigating peer conversations.

For someone who stutters, these moments may carry added pressure.

Therapy may address:

  • Understanding stuttering

  • Building confidence as a communicator

  • Reducing speaking avoidance

  • Developing personalized strategies

  • Participating in challenging speaking situations

  • Self-advocacy

Successful stuttering therapy is not measured only by how often someone stutters. Feeling willing and able to communicate matters too.

Speech Therapy for Teens

Communication demands do not disappear as children get older — they often become more complex.

Teenagers may need to:

  • Explain and defend ideas

  • Participate in group discussions

  • Give presentations

  • Navigate more complex friendships

  • Advocate for help

  • Understand abstract or figurative language

  • Organize increasingly complex information

Therapy for teens is age-appropriate and centered around skills that matter in their actual academic, social, and everyday lives.

Adult Speech Therapy in Evanston

Adults may seek speech therapy when communication changes begin affecting independence, professional responsibilities, relationships, or confidence.

Treatment may address:

  • Aphasia

  • Word-finding difficulties

  • Communication following stroke or neurological injury

  • Speech clarity

  • Cognitive-communication concerns

  • Stuttering

Goals are built around the situations that matter most to you.

I’m Stephanie Jeret, MS, CCC-SLP, a licensed speech-language pathologist and founder of Speak with Stephanie.

I work with children, teens, and adults throughout Evanston and Chicago’s North Shore.

My approach combines clinical expertise with practical application. Skills practiced in speech therapy should eventually become useful outside the session — while answering a teacher, talking with friends, completing homework, telling a story, navigating work, or simply having a conversation.
